Football League World's Reading fan pundit Harry Chafer has given his thoughts on the news that the club are ready to sack manager Jose Gomes following a poor start to the season.

Courtney Friday of the Reading Chronicle reported the news on Monday night, detailing that a late meeting was taking place at the Madejski Stadium, but Chafer believes that letting him go would be very rash.

"It doesn't make any sense to me for the owners to sack Gomes after backing him so heavily in the summer," the regular punter told Football League World.

"It shows a lack of patience which, to be honest, not many people have in football nowadays anyway. The club needs to stick with Gomes and give him some time to turn things around.

"Remember, last season he was using a team that wasn't his and managed to save us from the pretty dark situation we were in when he was appointed in December 2018. This season, he has finally been backed by the owners in the transfer window and has a team that he believes can really challenge at the top end of the table. But, that won't happen overnight - it takes time to build a successful team.

"I think it would be a very poor decision from the club if they were to sack Gomes. The guy deserves some time."

With 11 matches played this season, the Royals sit inside the relegatin zone in 22nd place, with no wins in their last five league matches and just two all season.

Gomes took over from Paul Clement in December 2018 and guided the club to safety in what was an intense relegation scrap at times, with the powers that be backing him heavily in the summer transfer window.

Large sums were splashed on attacking duo George Puscas and Lucas Joao with Michael Morrison, Charlie Adam, Matt Miazga and Ovie Ejaria all among those to arrive as well.
