Watford have emerged interested in Swansea City striker Michael Obafemi, as per our Football League World exclusive.

The report states that the Hornets will face competition from current divisional counterparts Brighton & Hove Albion.

With the Hertfordshire club looking increasingly likely to suffer an immediate relegation back to the Championship, the Hornets will be eager to compile a squad that is capable of bouncing straight back.

The 21-year-old has returned 11 goals in 30 Championship appearances this season, with 18 of these appearances coming in the form of starts.

Three of our writers here at FLW have shared their thoughts regarding Watford’s interest in the exciting forward…

Vicarage Road?

Obafemi has had a difficult few years before finding this rich vein of form under Russell Martin.

But it is easy to forget that the Irish international is only 21-years old and is still developing his game.

With Watford set to be relegated from the Premier League, this isn’t much of an enticing move for the youngster to make, especially with how well he is thriving in Wales.

The switch to Vicarage Road would come with a lot of pressure for such a sideways move.

It would be a good signing for Watford, who could use the added firepower up front.

But Swansea should aim to keep hold of the youngster, who has 11 league goals this season including six in his last nine appearances.

It might be worth a punt.

Obafemi has had a pretty good season I think it’s fair to say with a very good goals per game ratio and that says to me at Championship level at least he could be a very potent striker.

Of course, Watford will still hope they can achieve survival this season but it looks as though they are heading for the drop and I think with that in mind Obafemi is a player that could really boost their chances next year of challenging straight away for promotion once more.

The men from Vicarage Road may lose some of their better players this summer if and when they go down and so the rebuild needs to be shrewd, and I think Obafemi certainly represents that.

All things considered, I think it could be a really solid signing.

Michael Obafemi has had a brilliant season with Swansea this season and has been able to have a big impact on the team in the Championship so you can see why Watford are interested in the player.

This season the centre-forward has been consistent and has a return of 11 goals and three assists from 31 games. Therefore, Watford will feel encouraged by his numbers.

At only 21-years-old, there is still plenty of time for the player to develop his game and progress even further making this an excellent time to get him signed to the club.

Furthermore, if Watford do come down and are then looking to go straight back up to the Premier League, Obafemi would no doubt be able to adjust and handle the step up meaning this isn’t just a short term signing.
