Queens Park Rangers striker Paul Smyth is a loan target for Charlton Athletic

Lee Bowyer has confirmed Charlton Athletic are interested in the 21-year-old, as per the South London Press.

News of the interest comes after reports that current Charlton striker Karlan Grant is on talks with Premier League side Huddersfield Town over a possible move.

If Grant does leave for the bright lights of the Premier League, then the Addicks have a replacement lined up already, albeit for the short term.

The Loftus Road attacker signed a new deal with Steve McClaren’s side six days ago but has hardly featured this season, so a move away could be in the offing.

Any such departure will be a loan with the 21-year-old extending his stay in west London to at least 2021.

Smyth has managed just three league appearances this term, one from the start, amassing a total of 76 Championship minutes, which makes a temporary exit more and more likely.

And it looks as if Charlton have won the race for the striker.

With that said, we asked our team of FLW writers if they thought this would be a good signing for the Addicks?

Here’s what they had to say.

Gary Hutchinson

“Smyth can’t replace Grant.

“He would only be a loan signing so, in terms of replacing, it’s a non-starter.

“Sure, he’ll fill a gap, but can he cover an exciting young talent for a long period?

“No, because he’ll be off back to QPR at the end of the season.”

Louie Chandler

“It could be a masterstroke.

“But at the same time, it could be a complete waste of time. Smyth is in that stage of his career where he needs a run of games and goals.

“However, I am not sure he is good enough to step in for Grant.”

Jacob Potter

"It's a smart bit of business by Bowyer.

"Smyth isn't going to be getting anywhere near the QPR team this season, and it's no surprise to see him being linked with a move elsewhere.
"He would be an excellent addition to the Charlton squad and could be a valuable asset to their promotion bid this season. "
