The decision by Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder to play centre-half Chris Basham in central midfield would seem to be a sound one, as not only did the Blades leave Elland Road with all three points at the weekend, but Basham popped up with the winner on 71 minutes.

The Blades have now leapfrogged Leeds into second place and an automatic promotion spot in the Championship on the back of this result, with eight games of the season remaining.

So was Wilder playing Basham in midfield actually a masterstroke against Leeds?

We discuss.....

Gary Hutchinson

“It looks like it, doesn’t it?

“Surprising, but defenders do make decent midfielders.

“Sam Hutchinson has done a good job at Sheffield Wednesday too.”

Jacob Potter

"What a tactical genius he is.

"Having Basham in midfield proved to be an excellent move as he nullified the threat posed by the likes of Tyler Roberts and Mateusz Klich.

"He netted the winner in clinical style as well and it could be a season-defining move by Wilder."

George Harbey

"It’s been a masterstroke.

"It worked incredibly well against Leeds as they couldn’t deal with his presence in midfield, and it ultimately paid off as well.

"What a decision this is turning out to be."

Jay Taylor

“It certainly caught many off-guard.

“And in doing that it caused chaos during the game with Basham being the man to get forward for the Blades and scoring the all-important winner.

“Leeds never really got to grips so in that regard you could say it was a clever move by Wilder to operate him there.”
