Lee Gregory joined Stoke City last summer after a successful spell at Millwall, but was the initial reaction of his arrival the right response from fans?
Gregory, 31, arrived at Stoke last June as former boss Nathan Jones looked to bounce back after a fairly moderate season in the 2018/2019 season.
The striker arrived having had five years with Millwall, where he netted 77 goals in over 200 games for the club, and he was handed a starting place by Jones in the early months of the season.
Beating the likes of Tyrese Campbell, Sam Vokes and Mame Biram Diouf to a place in the Stoke eleven, Gregory had pressure firmly on his shoulders to produce the goods, but a drastic start to the season saw the Potters fail to win in their opening ten league games.
Jones was then sacked as manager and replaced by Northern Irish boss Michael O’Neill, who instantly handed Campbell a chance to show what qualities he had in leading the like for the former Premier League side.
Campbell impressed and has since kept his place with Vokes providing back-up for the young English striker, leaving Gregory with very few starts since the turn of 2020.

Four goals in 32 appearances this term is far from impressive, and it is hard to see where the Sheffield born striker fits in O’Neill’s plans next season.
Upon his arrival back in June, Stoke fans reacted with mix reviews of the signing, and it seems those that replied in a negative fashion have been proved right.
Below are just some of the initial responses to the striker’s arrival at Stoke…
Well what a disappointing first signing of the summer he’d be. We need to be looking at players that can not only get us to the PL but also keep us there.

A 30 year old with 15 goals in 2 seasons???? Is this really what we need?

I think he’s a good signing… Its just faith in signings has been lost after our last couple of 10-15 goal a season strikers have flopped completely

10 goals 7 assists in 44 games this season. I’m not sure anyone in our team has a better record this season, however he doesn’t strike you as the 20 goal a season type we desperately need

Decent signing for free

@ryanxyz5 15 goals in 2 seasons. No better than what we’ve already got. Sub for vokes if Afobe leaves so we can make a bit of profit atleast
