The current goalkeeping situation at Leeds United is a sensitive subject, with the majority of Elland Road frustrated by the club’s decision to let Rob Green leave over the summer and replace him with Felix Wiedwald, who has come in for plenty of criticism in recent weeks.

Green featured regularly last season under Garry Monk, but Thomas Christiansen made up his mind over the course of the summer that Wiedwald would start the season as Leeds’ first choice goalkeeper.

That decision has not been justified, but another of Christiansen’s summer decisions has – with Leeds moving to bring Andy Lonergan back to Elland Road following Green’s move to Huddersfield Town late in the summer transfer window.

Lonergan was initially brought in to deputise for Wiedwald, but with the German goalkeeper struggling during Leeds’ current slump, the 34-year-old has stepped in and done remarkably well in his three appearances in the Sky Bet Championship.

The goalkeeper’s most impressive outing came against Sheffield United in Leeds’ most recent defeat, where despite losing the game, Lonergan pulled off some magnificent saves to keep Leeds in the contest at half-time.

The number one shirt is Lonergan’s to lose at this point, and although Leeds’ supporters will still be disappointed by Christiansen’s decision to freeze out Green over the summer, he has redeemed himself with the decision to bring Lonergan back to Elland Road and reintroduce him to the starting XI.
