Jordan Rhodes’ permanent switch to Sheffield Wednesday was confirmed at the start of the month in a deal from Middlesbrough, and boss Carlos Carvalhal will hope the striker’s loan spell at Hillsborough towards the end of last season will have accounted for the player’s settling period in south Yorkshire.

Rhodes did not make the most electric of starts during the final four months of the season, and registered just 3 goals in 18 Owls appearances.

Carvalhal will know Rhodes has the ability to light up the division following prolific spells with Huddersfield and Blackburn, and the 27- year-old certainly has age on his side ahead of the new campaign.

Rhodes is entering the peak years of his career, and Carvalhal will know this could be the most prolific year of his career yet, should the Portuguese boss find the right system in which the player can operate.

Competition for a starting spot was high last season with a rotation policy often in progress, and ahead of the new season, Carvalhal must decide who is his number one man.

Former Sunderland striker Steven Fletcher is still on the books at Hillsborough, and his combative nature and ability in the air could certainly complement Rhodes tendency to play on the shoulder and snatch any chances that come his way.

The Scottish pair will hope to force themselves into Gordon Strachan’s plans, and a solid season together will certainly excite the international manager.

With the right service Rhodes will score for fun, and Carvalhal must find a way to draw the best from his goalscoring machine.
