When Sunderland captured the signing of Fabio Borini from Liverpool in August 2015, they thought they were signing a known quantity.

The Italian striker had previously been on loan at the Stadium of Light, bagging seven goals in 25 Premier League starts for the club. That prompted them to make him a summer target, but he rejected the move.

A year later it was all change and he signed a deal that cost the Black Cats £10m. It was a signal of their intent, not only to remain in the Premier League but to push up the table and maybe towards a Europa League spot.

Borini now plies his trade with AC Milan, proving that the scouting was spot on. He's an influential player, a livewire forward with the ability to play at the very top of the game. Sadly, for their £10m, Sunderland didn't get to see any of that.

He scored just seven goals in 50 league appearances for the club, leaving for Milan for a fee of £5.3m, but with just £1m paid up front. He certainly isn't the worst value for money the Black Cats have had in the last few years.

Sunderland fans are not easily fooled though and the overriding fear one his announcement was that him turning down the 2014 move meant he wasn't committed, which his goal ratio perhaps proves.

Here's what they were saying when he finally committed himself to the Stadium of Light.
