Joe Garner headed back to English football earlier in the summer following an ill fated season in the SPFL with Rangers, and will more than likely lead the line for new club Ipswich when the Tractor Boys kick off their campaign at home to Birmingham in a couple of weeks time.

The 29-year-old striker showed impressive form during a three year spell with Preston where he managed 49 goals in 129 league appearances, and will rejoin the Championship with the aim of rediscovering his goalscoring form once again.

Garner has made an excellent start to life in Suffolk, smashing 5 goals in only 3 pre-season games so far, and it appears from this early form that Garner may be discovering the confidence he seemed to have lost whilst north of the border.

While pre-season games are an entirely different kettle of fish to the 46 league fixtures that are to come, they can provide an early indication as to how a player has returned following the summer break and how well new transfers are settling into the club.

Garner has an excellent opportunity this season to remind those in the English game exactly what the division missed last year in his absence, and will look to push on and help manager Mick McCarthy’s men pull into the top half of the table.

Although it may seem strange that the player flopped in the SPFL following an impressive year in the much more competitive English second tier, perhaps Garner is better suited to the more rigorous demands of football in this country, and will surely re-find himself with Ipswich next season.
