Sky Bet League One side Ipswich Town are interested in signing Bury defender Adam Thompson this summer, according to reports from the East Anglian Daily Times.

The 26-year-old was a regular for the Shakers last season, making 54 appearances in all competitions as Ryan Lowe's side won automatic promotion from League Two.

But due to the turbulent financial conditions at Gigg Lane, Bury players have been told that they can leave the club having not been paid in full since March, and they can leave without commanding a fee if they give the club a fortnight’s notice.

The likes of Danny Mayor, Nicky Maynard and Nicky Adams have all left the club, with Thompson set to also depart Gigg Lane on a free transfer.

Now, it is believed that Ipswich are among a host of clubs interested in landing Thompson on a free transfer, as Paul Lambert continues to rebuild his squad ahead of the new season.

The Tractor Boys will be looking to add depth to their defensive options, with Toto Nsiala and captain Luke Chambers the only senior central defenders on the club's books at present.

Ipswich are yet to make an offer for the Northern Irish defender, but are understood to have watched him on different occasions last season.

The Verdict

Thompson is a quality defender, and even though the situation at Gigg Lane is appalling, it would be a real coup if Lambert's side were to land him on a free transfer.

He was excellent for Bury last season, filling in as a right-back if needs be, but displaying real leadership and character in the middle of defence, playing a load of games in the process.

Ipswich definitely need some more defenders, as going into the season with Nsiala, Chambers and a couple of youngsters just isn't enough.

Thompson would definitely fill a gap in the squad, and could be a very good signing indeed.
