Speaking to Ipswich Town’s official Twitter page (@Official_ITFC), Mustapha Carayol has admitted that Mick McCarthy was the reason behind his move to Portman Road yesterday.

Yesterday’s transfer deadline day was a whirlwind for Carayol, who saw his contract with Nottingham Forest terminated, which allowed him to move to Portman Road, where he has linked up with McCarthy’s Ipswich squad on a permanent deal.

Carayol has agreed a deal until the end of the current season at Portman Road, with the winger looking to build on his previous spells across the Championship, which have come at the likes of Middlesbrough, Leeds United and most recently, Nottingham Forest.

The 29-year-old has admitted that McCarthy was key to his move, he said:

Carayol could be set for his Ipswich debut this weekend, when McCarthy’s side travel to the Stadium of Light to face Sunderland, who find themselves threatened with relegation after a sloppy start to the season.

McCarthy has welcomed Carayol into his squad who currently sit 12th in the Championship table, with Ipswich knowing that results will have to improve in the coming weeks if they are to hold any hope of narrowing an eight-point gap to the top-six.

The Verdict

McCarthy is a manager that has a good reputation and you can understand why players want to play under him.

Carayol is one of those who has been swayed by McCarthy’s personality and management, which is a good sign for Ipswich, as they have got hold of a player desperate to play for them.

The 19-year-old has never really settled throughout his career, and will hope that McCarthy can take his game to the next level.
