Ipswich Town forward Aaron Drinan is closing in on a move to League Two side Leyton Orient this summer and his departure could be confirmed in the next few days, according to the Newham Recorder.

Paul Cook has already been ruthless with his squad building at Ipswich this summer and the Tractor Boys have seen as many as 19 players depart the club who were deemed to be surplus to requirements throughout the transfer window so far.

It is believed that Drinan could now be the 20th player to be allowed to leave Ipswich this summer, with the forward having managed to make just six starts in League One last season. Although the 23-year-old did make 22 league appearances overall in which he found the net once.

According to the Newham Recorder, ambitious League Two outfit Leyton Orient are set to bring him into the club this summer with Kenny Jackett continuing to rebuild the squad as he aims to take them to promotion back to League One during the 2021/22 campaign.

It is thought that an exit from Portman Road for Drinan is nearing completion now and that an announcement could be made by Leyton Orient within the next few days.

The Verdict

This is a transfer that makes a lot of sense really, it has been evident that Drinan was going to struggle to get regular first-team minutes at Portman Road especially in terms of getting starts. That suggests that a move away might be the best thing for him to get his career heading in the right direction and Leyton Orient might well be a good place for him to do that.

It seems that Cook was unlikely to have the forward high in his plans for next season and he has already shown that he will be happy to get rid of players who he does not feel will be able to be a strong part of his side for next season. That is what has been needed at Portman Road for a while now and this move would be a continuation of that.

Drinan is a player that could benefit from being sent to Leyton Orient and being a key part of a first-team squad that are trying to gain promotion from the fourth tier of English football. It would enable him the chance to get regular game time and will only benefit his career progression.
