Ipswich Town defender, Luke Chambers has emerged as a surprise transfer target for MLS side, Chicago Fire according to the Daily Mail.

Chambers is out of contract at the end of this season and his long-term future surely lies elsewhere, especially if the Tractor Boys are to drop into League One.

The 33-year-old has been a crucial member of the Ipswich squad for a number of years and has made over 300 appearances during a seven-year-spell with the East Anglian club.

He has made the most appearances for Ipswich in the club's history and will leave a sizeable void in the centre of the defence if he is to depart.

Those appearances include 33 this season and he has been a rare bright spark in a disappointing league campaign so far for Ipswich.

Chicago Fire already have the likes of Bastian Schweinsteiger in their side and they are thought to want to add some depth to their defence at the earliest of opportunities.

Ipswich boss, Paul Lambert is said to want to keep Chambers at the club for as long as possible, but he might have his hands tied with the club likely to trim the wage bill if they are relegated from the Championship this season.

Ipswich supporters will be desperate for Chambers to remain with the club, but with Lambert not opting to take up the option of an additional year to add to his contract, his future remains up in the air.

The Verdict:

He's surely heading for the exit door if they're relegated.

Chambers has been impressive this season, despite his Ipswich side struggling this season in the Championship.
