Left-back Matt Penney is seemingly aiming for a successful few months, after joining Charlton Athletic on loan from League One rivals Ipswich Town.

Penney first joined Ipswich back in the summer of 2021, arriving from Sheffield Wednesday on a free transfer.

The full-back, went on to make 26 appearances in all competitions during his first season with the Tractor Boys, before spending the first half of this season on loan with Motherwell.

Having made 18 appearances for the Scottish Premiership side, the 24-year-old returned to Ipswich earlier this month, but has now moved on again, joining Charlton on loan for the rest of the season.

Now it seems as though Penney is determined to show just what he can do at this, level during his time at The Valley.

Taking to Twitter to react to confirmation of his move to Charlton, Penney wrote: "Delighted!!! Big second half of the season incoming"

As things stand, Penney's contract with Ipswich is set to expire this summer, although the Portman Road club do have the option to extend that deal by a further 12 months.

The Verdict

This does look as though it could turn out to be a rather useful signing for Charlton.

It has been clear throughout much of the window that they have needed a left-back, having lacked options in that position during the first half of the campaign.

That is something they have now got with Penney, and the experience he has in a number of different high level leagues, suggests he can be a useful option for them.

As a result, this looks like it will be a useful piece of business for the Addicks, and one that will be a welcome sight for those at The Valley.
