Kieran McKenna has revealed that Bersant Celina has rejected an international call-up to remain at Ipswich Town as they continue to chase down a League One play-off spot, in conversation with the East Anglian Daily Times.

Celina, who has represented Kosovo 29 times during his career thus far, first appeared for his national side in March 2014.

With Ipswich six points outside of the play-offs and in strong form heading into the crunch end of the campaign, it appears that Celina will stay and try to play his part in Ipswich's push for a Championship return.

Speaking to the East Anglian Daily Times about Celina's situation heading into the international break, McKenna said: “My understanding is that Bersant’s had some communication with the federation and made it clear that he really wants to stay next week and wants to be involved in a couple of important games that we have.

“As I understand it, he’ll be staying with us and available over the next couple of weeks.”

The verdict

Celina is enjoying his second spell on loan with the Tractor Boys, netting five times and providing a further five assists in 25 appearances thus far.

The 25-year-old has been a consistent source of chances at Portman Road this season, possessing the ability to open up defences several times during a match.

Subsequently, the young attacker is set to play an important role in what remains, with the international break coming at a difficult time for him and the club.

This will be a massive boost for McKenna, and whilst they possess a squad full of talent, there is no playing down the importance that the 25-year-old has at Portman Road.
