Ipswich Town have held talks with Bury over the signing of out-of-contract winger Danny Mayor, according to the East Anglian Daily Times.

The 28-year-old was a key player for Bury last season, as the Shakers won automatic promotion from League Two, but is due to become a free agent this summer.

Mayor scored twelve goals and registered twelve assists in 44 appearances in all competitions for Bury last season and has attracted interest from several clubs this summer.

The winger spent yesterday at Plymouth Argyle, who are managed by former Bury boss Ryan Lowe and has also attracted interest from League Two play-off winners Tranmere Rovers, where he has spent time on loan in the past.

Ipswich manager Paul Lambert is looking to strengthen his attacking options this summer and will be hoping to build a team that can challenge for automatic promotion next season, following their relegation from the Championship.

The Verdict

This would be a good signing for Ipswich. Mayor has got plenty of experience in the EFL and was outstanding for Bury last season.

Mayor is a primarily a left-winger but can also operate on the right or behind the frontman, so he would be a very useful signing.

Ipswich are one of the clubs who will be expected to challenge for automatic promotion next season and are an attractive proposition for Mayor, although he could also be tempted by a move to Tranmere, having spent time on loan there in the past.

The winger may also be keen to reunite with his former manager Lowe at Plymouth, although he might not be so keen on dropping back down to League Two.

It will be interesting to see what happens with this transfer story as the window continues, but one thing is for sure, this would be a smart signing for Ipswich on a free transfer.
