Following his side’s excellent opening day win over Birmingham City, Ipswich Town boss Mick McCarthy has backed up his side’s strong performances by adding Rangers striker, Martyn Waghorn, to his Tractor Boys squad.

Waghorn had been strongly linked with a return to former club Sunderland, so for McCarthy to pull off a deal marks a real coup for the former Republic of Ireland manager.

Waghorn spent two years north of the border, scoring almost a goal every other game, and his pace and movement in the forward positions will be a welcome addition to the squad at Portman Road.

Fans were fortunate enough to see another new signing from Rangers, Joe Garner, settle the game on Sunday with a second half winner, and will hope that Waghorn will enjoy similar success at the club.

Garner and Waghorn developed a solid understanding whilst at Ibrox, and transferring this to the Championship could see a bountiful partnership develop between the pair again this season.

Ipswich produced a remarkably average return last year, but with the business conducted by McCarthy in the transfer window thus far, there is renewed optimism around the Suffolk club.

Ipswich have been at this level since 2002, and although they are unlikely to alter that statistic this season, the club certainly appear to be taking the right steps to be in a position to challenge in future years.

Fans will be delighted with the start made by their side and the new faces in the squad, and will look forward to the long campaign their beloved side have ahead of them, with McCarthy at the helm.
