Arsenal and Newcastle are both interested in signing Ipswich Town midfielder Flynn Downes, with the Magpies also keen on a move for Tractor Boys defender Luke Woolfenden, a report from The Chronicle has claimed.

Both Downes and Woolfenden have been regular feature for Ipswich this season, helping Paul Lambert's side mount an early-season push for League One promotion following relegation from the Championship last season.

Despite the fact that a poor run of results has seen Ipswich drop considerably in the race for promotion in recent months, it seems the pair are both attracting some strong interest from further up the football pyramid.

According to the latest reports, Newcastle have identified both Woolfenden and Downes as potential targets, with their recruitment team watching both players throughout the course of the season so far.

Arsenal are also said to have been monitoring Downes this season, and it is thought that Ipswich had previously quoted clubs an asking price of £7million for the England youth international, but that the financial issues brought about by football's current suspension mean the midfielder could now be available for a fee around half that original amount.

Both Downes and Woolfenden - who was linked with another Premier League side in the shape of Sheffield United earlier this season - have just over two years remaining on their contracts with Ipswich, securing their futures at Portman Road until the end of the 2021/22 season.

The Verdict

This interest could be something of a problem for Ipswich.

Both Woolfenden and Downes look to be hugely promising players, and the Tractor Boys will not want to lose them so early in their career, when they could still make a significant contribution to their cause.

However, the chance of a move to the Premier League will surely be tempting for both players, and with the difficult financial situation clubs have been put in by the ongoing postponement of matches, it could be hard for Ipswich to ward off this interest from that perspective as well.
