Ipswich Town have announced that that centre-back James Wilson has been rewarded for his early season form with a new 18-month deal.

The 30-year-old only joined the Tractor Boys in the summer on an initial five-month contract, however he has quickly established himself as an important player for Paul Lambert.

Wilson has played in eight league games so far, with his partnership alongside Luke Chambers crucial to the success the side have had.

And, Ipswich confirmed on their official site that they had agreed a new contract with the player that will keep him at Portman Road until the summer of 2021, whilst the club also have a 12-month option to extend it if they want.

The centre-back tasted defeat for the first time in League One with the Suffolk outfit as Lambert's side went down 2-0 at home to Rotherham last night.

Despite that, they are second in the league and have a game in hand on leaders Peterborough who are top because of their superior goal difference.

Ipswich are back in action against struggling Southend this weekend.

The verdict

You have to say that the former Lincoln man thoroughly deserves this new contract as he has been superb this season.

Whilst there are plenty of reasons behind Ipswich's fantastic start, Lambert has built from the back and the displays of Chambers and Wilson have given the team a real solidity.

Now, he will want to help the team get back on track when they face a very winnable game at Sol Campbell's Southend on Saturday.
