Greg Leigh spent last season with Morecambe where he made 36 appearances scoring twice and providing four assists from left-back.

However, following the expiration of his contract, he was released from the club.

Nevertheless, according to a report from the East Anglian Daily Times, Ipswich Town are closing on a deal for the 27-year-old ahead of the new season.

Kieran McKenna could use some additional options on the left in his side following the expiration of Dominic Thompson's loan spell as well as players leaving the club.

Furthermore, whilst primarily being a left-back player, last season Leigh showed his versatility across the pitch as he also filled in at right-back and left midfield when the Shrimps needed the additions in those places.

The player would join the Tractorboys with strong League One experience on his side having made over 150 appearances in the league for the likes of Crewe Alexandra and Bury over the years.

Whether or not he will be part of the starting line-up is yet to be seen as the report also claims that McKenna will continue to look at strengthening his left side.

However, this would be a solid start for Ipswich in their recruitment in this position and on a free transfer, it's a relatively low risk move.

The Verdict:

This is a strong start to McKenna's recruitment on his left side this summer.

It is a position where he needs reinforcements and whilst Leigh was released by Morecambe this summer after they had a difficult season in League One, he is a player with plenty of experience in the league that will come in handy.

The Ipswich boss will probably be keen to look at further options for this side that would possibly be preferred in the starting line-up but considering this is a free transfer, it makes the 27-year-old a good squad player to have.

Furthermore, with the Tractoboys aiming for promotion next season, to have someone that can provide experience off the pitch as well as on it will only help the mentality of the squad as they push forward.
