Accrington Stanley defender Janoi Donacien is close to joining Ipswich Town, according to The East Anglian Daily Times.

The 24-year-old defender is on the verge of sealing a switch the Championship from the League One new-boys.

A fee between the two clubs has been agreed with personal terms to be decided ahead of a proposed medical before the move is completed.

Making 51 appearances for Accrington last season in all competitions, he help guide the club to the League Two title.

According to the East Anglian Daily Times, Accrington boss John Coleman said: “I think it’s getting finalised today, not done yet, but I’d be surprised if he’s not an Ipswich player by tonight.”

Ipswich only have one senior centre-back at the club with Luke Chambers in desperate need of some company in the defensive area.

The £225,000 rated defender looks set to join the Championship side ahead of the club’s opening fixture of the new season at home to Blackburn Rovers on Saturday.

The verdict

Danacien was an integral part of the Stanley side to win the League Two title and gain promotion to the third-tier for the first time in the club’s history.

At 24-years-old, the defender has performed brilliantly for a side who were odds-on to be relegated to the National League last term.

Having helped guide the club to the unprecedented success, he is going to be other club’s radars.

Ipswich taking a punt on the defender is admirable and shows manager Paul Hurst is looking to give players in the lower leagues their chance should they deserve it.

It might be a risk of a transfer, but if it pays off, it will be a stroke of genius from the Ipswich manager.
