Ipswich Town got their season off to the perfect start this weekend with a hard fought 1-0 victory over a Birmingham City side tipped for bigger things this year, and manager Mick McCarthy will be delighted with the effort his men showed in Saturday’s game.
New signing Joe Garner settled the game with a strike early in the second half, and marked his return to the English game as a match winner following a spell in Scotland.
McCarthy will not rest on his laurels however, and is expected to add to his squad before the summer window closes to ensure his men are in a position to build upon this excellent start.
The former Ireland boss wants more attacking options, and has been linked with a move for Cardiff City winger, Craig Noone.
The 29-year-old wideman could be on his way out of South Wales in the coming weeks, and McCarthy should certainly consider launching a bid for the former Brighton man.
A pacey winger with the unnerving ability to beat his man, Noone would be a wonderful addition to the squad at Portman Road, and fans at the Welsh club may wonder why the player is not more central to Neil Warnock’s plans.
Following a poor season last year, McCarthy has strengthened his Suffolk outfit well this summer, and Noone will certainly be enticed by the prospect of playing under the manager.
Building on the opening result is key, and by launching a bid for Noone, McCarthy will hope to see more of the same from his Tractor Boys.
What areas could you see from Saturday’s game that still need strengthening, Ipswich fans?
