Ipswich manager Mick McCarthy was pleased to see David McGoldrick return from injury after five months out.
The 26-year-old played the last 20 minutes of The Tractor Boys 2-1 win against Southend, after missing the final two months of the season with a knee injury.
“It was great to see Didz back in action and he has done remarkably well because he has only trained three or four times with the group,” said McCarthy, speaking to the club’s website, after the game
“He showed some silky touches but he is short of match fitness, five months short of match fitness.
“I nearly didn’t play him because the grass was so long and you can easily get your studs caught and twist your knee. He had a run at half-time though and said he was okay to play.
“We’re obviously delighted he is back but he has a way to go yet. We won’t be setting any date on him being ready. He will be ready when he is ready.”
Ipswich midfielder Anthony Wordsworth scored the winner with the last kick off the game after Southend’s Myles Weston cancelled out Balint Bajner’s opener.
