Ipswich eyeing deadline day move for experienced Championship defender

Championship outfit Ipswich Town are lining up a deadline day move for Derby County defender Jason Shackell, reports reliable journalist Alan Nixon on Twitter.

The 33-year-old returned to Pride Park back in 2015 three years after leaving for Burnley, and although he appeared in all 48 of the Rams’ Championship games in their run to the play-off semi-finals back in 2015/16, last season was not as fruitful for the centre-back.

The former Norwich City and Wolves defender played just eight games for the East Midlands outfit in the league last term and failed to appear in any of their last 19 games of the campaign, with a back injury wrecking his hopes of nailing down a first team spot under new boss Gary Rowett.

And it appears that he could be on his way out of Pride Park this afternoon, as recent reports from Nixon on Twitter suggest that Mick McCarthy’s Ipswich are lining up a loan move for the 33-year-old in a bid to bolster their defensive ranks.

The Tractor Boys made a fine start to the new Championship season by winning their first four matches, but a 2-0 defeat at home to Fulham last weekend has somewhat highlighted that more reinforcements are likely needed at Portman Road before today’s 11pm deadline.

But whether they can get a deal done for Shackell between now and the deadline very much remains to be seen.

The Verdict: Jason Shackell started Derby County’s first six league games of last season, but injury problems have thwarted his chances of reclaiming his place in the Rams starting eleven.

The 33-year-old played 90 minutes in their Carabao Cup win over Grimsby last week but other than that hasn’t had a sniff of first team football since January, and with Curtis Davies arriving from Hull City in the summer, his chances of regular football appear slim.

And that is probably why Mick McCarthy’s Ipswich Town are reportedly keeping tabs on him, as the centre-back has proven his quality at Championship level before, and has the necessary experience and know-how to seriously benefit the Tractor Boys squad.

How a player reacts after injury is always a cause for concern, but if Shackell can indeed get the minutes needed and thus return to his previous level, it could turn out to be a very shrewd move from Ipswich if they are able to get a deal done at some stage today.
