Ipswich Town have made their first signing of the season by securing Trevor Chalobah on a season-long loan from Chelsea.
It is a cracking piece of business. The 18-year old centre-back is yet to feature for the West London side but is considered highly promising.
The past 12 months have provided a glimpse of Chalobah’s potential. Having featured for the England Under-19s in their triumphant European Championship campaign, he was given the captain’s armband for the qualifiers and can expect to feature again in this year’s tournament. Domestically, an impressive run in Chelsea’s Under-23 squad was rewarded with Chalobah being named on the bench in both the Premier League and the FA Cup.
He would be a natural fit for Ipswich with their focus on youth. Mick McCarthy created one of the younger squads in the Championship last season. This has been followed up this window with several older players already off-loaded as well as the securing of Paul Hurst as McCarthy’s replacement. He was noted during his time at Shrewsbury for giving opportunities to young players. Consequently, he will likely be given plenty of game time despite his age.
Ipswich have one of the smallest budgets. Consequently, the ability to bring in quality talent for as little as possible is crucial. At present Chalobah is unlikely to be a regular match winner, but he will be in the future. In fostering early attachment to the club, Ipswich put themselves in a fantastic position to secure his services permanently in the future.
