Sunday’s clash between Leeds United and Middlesbrough was set to be a full-blown, toxic affair at Elland Road, with former Leeds boss Garry Monk returning to the club for the first time since handing in his resignation in May.

The event did not disappoint, with Leeds emerging as 2-1 victors in a game marred by controversy both on and off the pitch.

Middlesbrough defender Daniel Ayala was at the centre of the storm, with an apparent ‘punch’ going on unnoticed, before his chokeslam on Leeds defender Luke Ayling eventually resulting in a penalty to Boro, after Ayling dragged the Spaniard to the ground in response to the offence missed by the officials.

Bad feeling around the ground extended to the stands, with Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Phil Hay reporting on Twitter that the FA had launched an investigation into reports of flag poles being thrown onto the pitch at Elland Road.

The FA are also said to be reviewing other incidents from the game.

The Verdict

Elland Road was a cauldron on Sunday, and many will be disappointed by many of the scenes both on and off the pitch.

Ayala is sure to receive some form of retrospective ban for his multiple offences, but what will concern both clubs the most is the behaviour of fans.

Both sets of supporters were riled up for the tie due to Garry Monk’s departure to Teesside, and many allowed the occasion to overcome their better judgement.

Leeds could face a big fine if found guilty of failing to control their fans.
