Bristol City and Premier League Burnley are said to be locked in negotiations over a potential swap deal involving Josh Brownhill and Nahki Wells, with Football Insider reporting that the latter could be set to be used as a bargaining chip in negotiations.

Brownhill's swashbuckling performances for the Robins have clearly not gone unnoticed amongst clubs on high, with Burnley having long been linked with a move for the 24-year-old midfielder.

With five goals and two assists to his name, despite playing in a more withdrawn role under Lee Johnson, Brownhill is one of the most coveted midfield players in the Championship and could well be willing to test his abilities in the league above if an opportunity came calling.

Burnley recently recalled Wells from his loan spell at QPR and the Bermudan front man could well be used as a way to smoothen negotiations, with the Robins said to hold an interest in acquiring the striker.

Wells currently has 13 goals in 26 Championship appearances to his name and would surely relish the chance to move to the promotion chasers this month.

The Verdict

This is set to be one of the most intriguing deals of the current transfer window, with two players at the top of their game at the centre of a tug of war between the two clubs.

Brownhill is likely to be viewed as an integral part of Bristol City's promotion bid and it will take a strong offer from any club, let alone Burnley, to prise him away from Ashton Gate.

Johnson has been pretty vocal about the need for his side to bring in a striker this month and for that reason a deal involving Wells could well appeal to the former Oldham Athletic boss this month.

Meanwhile, the Robins will be seeking to pick up yet another victory in the league when they take on Reading at the Madejski Stadium tomorrow night.
