Derby County boss Liam Rosenior wants his side to be aiming for a Championship spot next season now that their off the field issues have been sorted out.

With the club having new owners, it means the side can focus on the football and it has also meant they've been able to add plenty of new signings to their team.

They have a completely new team almost and now they'll be aiming for a League One promotion. However, it appears that Rosenior has a few more players he might want to sign before the window shuts and one such name is Martyn Waghorn from Coventry, as per the Daily Mail.

The Championship player will be familiar to Rams' supporters, with the striker having played for the club in the past. During his time at Pride Park, he played in a total of 111 league games and spent three seasons in total with the side, helping them to stay in the division.

After joining Coventry though, he has found gametime a lot harder to come by and it means that he could now be available for a transfer during the window. Now, Derby are ready to sign him back on a short-term basis, as they look to add goals to their team in League One.

Speaking about the potential transfer deal for the player though, Derby County fan pundit Jason Straw has revealed that he isn't too sure yet about a transfer deal for Waghorn. Whilst he admitted that many will welcome him back to the club, his age and form means that perhaps a transfer deal shouldn't happen for the forward.

Speaking about the potential transfer deal then, he said:"Martyn Waghorn reportedly set for a loan move back to Derby, he'll certainly be welcome with open arms from the majority of fans I think because of his last day heroics that kept us up a couple of seasons ago.

"I think if you look at the time that Martyn spent at Derby over that four season period I think it was, might have even have been five, he was very up and down, we saw some of his best form, we saw some mediocre form but he would obviously be a viable option in League One. He's not a prolific goalscorer, or he certainly wasn't for us in the Championship, I don't think he necessarily did a great deal at Coventry either since he's been there so the wrong side of 30, is he somebody that Derby are really interested in?

"I don't know, I suppose it depends who else is in and around, he knows the club, he's obviously worked with Liam before, so a lot might see it as a good fit. Me personally, I'm a little bit on the fence with it. Do I think he'd be a good addition? Quite possibly but l think looking back to ex-players, the wrong side of 30, I'm just not sure if that's quite where Derby want to be going if I'm completely honest but an intriguing one and we'll see how it pans out between now and the end of the transfer window."

The Verdict

Signing a player like Martyn Waghorn in League One will surely add goals to the team, even if he is getting into the latter stages of his career.

Whilst the player might not be a great option in the Championship any more, there is nothing to say that at a familiar club and a lower league, the striker won't be able to bag at least ten goals for the club if he completes a transfer move this window. A loan deal for the forward too would also let Derby try him rather than committing to a permanent deal.

Bagging only a solo goal for Coventry since his move to the Sky Blues - and with very little gametime available at the club - a move to the Rams would likely suit Waghorn. He would get more minutes and likely more goals too, so it would be a good transfer for player and the club.

However, fan pundit Jason is likely right when he says that it is a move that could be a risk for Derby. Considering his age and the fact that the player is likely rusty, he might not provide all the goals that the Rams want this season.
