The international break probably came as a welcome respite for Sunderland fans who have so far endured another torrid campaign supporting their club.

The initial optimism of the season is now gone and fans of the Black Cats will be hoping that this next busy schedule of games is going to see their side turn things around.

There has been some negative news ahead of the Championship resuming this weekend, though, with Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill saying that Paddy McNair is not going to be ready for his nation's World Cup Play-off next month.

Indeed, as quoted by The Sunderland Echo, the international boss was talking about his side's games next month that could yield a World Cup spot and it appears McNair won't be around:

"It would be nice to have one or two of the players we're missing back. We hopefully will have Jamie Ward back for the play-off.

"It's unlikely that we'll have McNair or (Craig) Cathcart back."

The young defender has been out for some time with injury for the Black Cats but is expected to return to the U23 side before making the jump back to the senior team before too long.

That might still not be quick enough for his international manager, though, and so it remains to be seen just what happens in the coming weeks in terms of the defender's progress.

The Verdict

In many ways this could prove a blessing in disguise for McNair as it will allow him to work his way back up to fitness at his own pace.

Sunderland fans will also be happy as the risk of him getting injured again is reduced but the player is bound to want to play if he feels he can.
