Sunderland are considering signing Derby striker Chris Martin on an 18-month loan deal in order to see off competition from the other clubs eyeing up the player.

The Scotland international is wanted by several Championship sides, although Sunderland and Reading are the two clubs who have been credited with the most serious interest.

The Black Cats need for a forward is clear, with teenagers Joshua Maja and Joel Asoro the only two options Chris Coleman has in the final third following the departures of James Vaughan and Lewis Grabban.

Therefore, according to the Northern Echo, the Wearside outfit are considering offering to sign the Rams forward on an extended loan spell in order to land Martin.

Whilst Derby would send the ex-Norwich man out for the remainder of the season, the report reveals they would prefer the additional security of a longer deal.

The arrival of Cameron Jerome, to add to the many strikers they already have, has meant Martin is no longer needed at Pride Park.

An 18-month loan would keep Martin off the wage bill for next season as well, meaning he would only have one year left on his contract when the deal ends.

The Verdict

Sunderland need to do whatever they can, within reason, to get Martin as he is proven at this level and exactly what they need.

Of course, an 18-month deal would have to have clauses as the player nor Sunderland would want the deal to run if the Black Cats are relegated.

For the minute though, it’s all about the here and now. If a longer deal convinces Derby and Martin to reject approaches from Reading or anyone else, then it’s worth it.
