Hibernian could turn to Sunderland manager Jack Ross after their tough start to the season in the SPFL, as reported by The Sun on Sunday (29th September, Page 61).

Hibs have had an awful start to the season under former Leeds boss Paul Heckingbottom; they're second from bottom with just five points. Only St Johnstone are keeping them off the foot of the table and time is slowly ebbing away for Heckingbottom.

That will result in a hunt for a new manager and it seems Ross is one they'll consider for the role. Despite putting Sunderland in promotion contention, the pressure is mounting on him after a couple of results the fans did not like.

Having been comfortably beaten by Peterborough (3-0), they then struggled to a 1-1 draw with whipping boys Bolton, results that have only reinforced negative feelings towards Ross after failure to earn promotion last season.

Having already proven himself in Scotland, Ross still has a solid reputation. He took St Mirren back to the SPFL prior to accepting the Sunderland job and his knowledge of Scotland's game has been reflected in some of his transfer business with the Black Cats, including taking Marc McNulty on loan after his Hibs spell.

The Verdict

This could offer Sunderland an easy way out of their current situation. They won't want to sack Ross if they can help it as they're not doing badly and there's the issue of financial recompense.

However, if a side made an approach for him, it might be a good way out for everyone concerned. Ross leaves with his reputation intact, Sunderland don't get the stigma of being a sacking club despite the promotion push and Hibs get their man.

Many Sunderland fans will surely be looking at this development and hoping Paul Heckingbottom loses his next couple of matches, that's for sure.
