Sunderland defender Bailey Wright could be out for up to three weeks with a calf injury, while left-back Callum McFadzean missed the club's 3-0 win at Burton on Saturday due to concussion protocols, manager Lee Johnson has revealed.

Wright was forced off at half time in the Black Cats' penalty shootout win over Lincoln in the EFL Trophy semi-final on Wednesday night, with this update meaning he is now a doubt for the final of that competition on the 14th March.

McFadzean meanwhile, played the full 90 minutes against Lincoln in midweek, but did not feature in the matchday squad for that win over Burton.

Discussing the situation surrounding the duo in the aftermath of that victory at The Pirelli Stadium, Johnson was quoted by The Sunderland Echo as saying: "Callum was out because of the concussion protocols, so that was a bit frustrating that one.

"You’ve got to do the right thing by the player, and the doctors have a lot of power now, rightly so.
"In terms of Bailey Wright, he’s going to be out for two or three weeks with a small tear to a part of his calf.” So far this season, Wright has made 31 appearances in all competitions for Sunderland, scoring twice, while McFadzean has one goal in 17 appearances to his name. Following that victory over Burton, the Black Cats have now climbed into the League One play-off places, although they are still eight points adrift of the automatic promotion spots. The Verdict It seems as though Sunderland just can't catch a break in defence this season. The Black Cats have had an endless stream of injuries in their backline this season, and that one now suffered by the Wright will be of particular concern, given his experience and ability. However, it does appear as though Sunderland may soon have some players returning from injuries in that position, while the likes of Luke O'Nien and Lynden Gooch have impressed with their versatility recently. As a result, you do feel as though Sunderland have the tools available to cope with these latest individual setback reasonably well.
