When Real Madrid youngster Jordi Govea signed for Championship side Swansea, many fans were left scratching their heads at the decision by the left-back.

After his contract expired in the summer of 2018 at the Spanish giants, Govea decided to move to Wales to be part of Graham Potter's Swansea City side.

However, the 19-year-old is yet to make an appearance for the former Premier League side after he suffered a double tear to his hamstring which has ruled him out of action until now.

But with Govea set to return to first-team training next week, his recovery will be a huge boost to Graham Potter's side as the hectic festive period edges ever closer.

Govea will provide excellent competition to Matt Grimes who has been filling in at left-back for the large majority of this season for the Swans.

With Govea being such a young upcoming prospect, it is unlikely that Potter will throw him straight into first-team action after he has built up his match fitness but when he is fit, you can expect the youngster to be in and around the first-team squad on a regular basis.

Speaking to Swansea's official website, Swans Under 23's physio Huw Roberts revealed that the defender is making good progress in his recovery from the length injury lay-off.

'He has worked hard and we are pleased with his progress.

'He is a strong lad who has come through a difficult injury. He has put in a lot of effort to make sure he is back up to speed.

'Despite the injury he has kept a smile on his face which shows his character and we are looking forward to him being back in full training soon.'

The Verdict:

Govea's return to the squad will be a huge boost to Graham Potter's side and will provide the Swansea boss with some added depth to his defensive options.

With Swansea boasting one of the league's best defensive records, Govea may struggle to force his way into the first-team set up in Wales but he will be confident in his ability when he is needed in the starting XI and will have to make the most of his chances when called upon by Potter.
