Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez has admitted star striker Dwight Gayle is struggling to mentally overcome his injuries, according to a report in the Northern Echo.
The in form former Crystal Palace striker has recently suffered a recurrence of a hamstring injury which had kept him out for over a month previously, and Benitez has admitted that Gayle is struggling for confidence in the injury being healed.
Benitez said: ‘He was not comfortable, but all the tests we did before he played against Norwich, he was fine. The tests we have done after are okay. It is just a question of confidence, he has to feel that he is fine. Now, we just have to treat him and make sure he is comfortable.’
The Spanish manager will be hoping to have Gayle back as soon as possible though as he looks to guide his team to a top two finish and an immediate return to the Premier League.
Gayle is the top scorer in the Championship this term, with 20 goals, just ahead of Leeds United star Chris Wood.
