Injured Sheffield Wednesday star, Fernando Forestieri, has taken to his personal Twitter account to deliver an update as he continues his path back to full fitness.

Forestieri is a long-term absentee for the Owls, and has not featured for Carlos Carvalhal’s side since the Carabao Cup defeat to Bolton Wanderers in August.

Carvalhal confirmed in early September that Wednesday could be without Forestieri until December, after he was forced into surgery for a knee injury that has troubled him for some time.

The 27-year-old has now taken to social media to reveal that he is stepping up his quest to return to full fitness, posting a video on the exercise bike along with the caption: “Happy first day back in the gym.”

Forestieri is a vital cog in Wednesday’s machine, scoring 27 goals in 73 appearances for the Owls since his arrival at Hillsborough ahead of the 2015/16 campaign.

In the Italian’s absence this season, Wednesday have struggled to make a major impact in the Championship.

Carvalhal’s side entered this week’s international break in 12th, having picked up 16 points from their opening 11 fixtures of the season.

Following this week’s international break, Wednesday face Bolton again, where they will be looking to build on the impressive 3-0 victory against Leeds United they recorded last Sunday.

The Verdict

Sheffield Wednesday’s supporters will be delighted with Forestieri’s update, with the Italian playmaker a firm fan favourite at Hillsborough.

Forestieri’s comeback does not seem imminent, but he is clearly on the right path, and when he returns, Carvalhal’s squad will be significantly stronger.

Wednesday are missing the Italian, with Forestieri a different type of player to what Carvalhal currently has available to him.

Whilst the 27-year-old has his flaws, he is undoubtedly one of the Championship’s biggest talents and will improve Wednesday's side when he returns.
