Wolverhampton Wanderers are set to meet Adama Traore’s release clause of £18m, and in the process, smash their club-record transfer-fee to secure the service of the Middlesbrough flyer.

A report in the Telegraph has confirmed that Nuno Espirito Santo is desperate to get a deal over the line for Traore, despite a recent should injury picked up in a pre-season friendly.

The report claims that Traore is back in light training and Wolves are set to press on and meet his £18m release clause, which will trump the £15m they paid for Ruben Neves last summer.

The 22-year-old was key to Middlesbrough’s failed promotion push last season, with his form post-Christmas extremely impressive.

Over the course of the season, the ex-Aston Villa winger made 36 leagues appearances, which brought five goals and a further 10 assists, as Tony Pulis’ side finished fifth and reached the play-off semi-finals.

With Boro facing up to another year in the Championship, interest in Traore has intensified, with Wolves emerging as leading contenders to sign the winger.

It is expected that Wolves will complete a deal to sign Traore before next Thursday’s deadline, with Nuno Santo highlighting the 22-year-old as someone who can have a real impact in the Premier League.

The Verdict

Middlesbrough are getting what they value Traore at, whilst Wolves are getting their hands on a talented player.

This deal has taken some time to complete because of Traore’s injury, and when it is completed, Boro will have very little time to source a replacement.

Pulis needs to have something lined up in the meantime.
