Blackburn Rovers have confirmed on the club’s official website that Charlie Mulgrew has a chance of playing a part in this weekend’s clash with Rochdale.

Rovers and Mulgrew were not in Sky Bet League One action last week due to the international break, where the 31-year-old defender was away representing Scotland in their World Cup qualifiers.

Mulgrew was substituted is Scotland’s victory over Malta on Monday evening with a foot injury, which Blackburn feared would rule him out for a period of time.

However, the Ewood Park club have delivered an update on Mulgrew’s injury, stating it isn’t as bad a first feared, and although he will be monitored over the rest of the week, he has a chance of playing in Saturday’s clash with Rochdale.

Mulgrew has been exceptional for Blackburn in he early stages of their League One campaign, captaining Tony Mowbray’s side to two victories from their opening four fixtures.

The 31-year-old has also got three goals from those four league appearances, including two in Blackburn’s 4-1 triumph over MK Dons in late August.

Mowbray’s side will be going in search of a hat-trick of League One victories when they face Rochdale on Saturday, and Mulgrew is not the only defender handing Rovers a welcome boost, with Derrick Williams also set to be fit.

The Verdict

This is huge news for Blackburn ahead of the weekend, with Mulgrew absolutely essential to their chance of success this season in League One.

The defender has already shown his quality this season in both attack and defence, and he is the man Blackburn will turn to when going in search of an instant return to the Championship.

After a slow start to the season, Mowbray’s side are beginning to show signs that they are growing and could get back amongst the early season leaders.
