There looks to be a marked change in the transfer policy at Nottingham Forest under Martin O'Neill with a move for domestic talent very much to the fore, with the club under previous managers very much centred on foreign imports.

O'Neill is currently looking towards change, with winger Sammy Ameobi signing for the 67-year-old on a free transfer, having left Bolton Wanderers after a troubled 2018/19 campaign for the club.

So does the pursuit of Ameobi mark a change in transfer policy at the City Ground?

"It certainly does.

"Whether it's the right move is debatable but O'Neill clearly has a preference for domestic players as he has shown regularly in his managerial career.

"Therefore, he is certainly going to push for signings that have proven themselves in England before and you can understand why he wants to do that.

"The obvious issue is whether the board are prepared to do that because last year was about bringing in high-profile Portuguese talent and they had mixed success with that.

"Ultimately, there's no right or wrong approach with a transfer strategy but it's vital that everyone is pulling in the same direction in terms of recruitment as quality upgrades are needed this summer."

“I think it was almost inevitable that O’Neill would look to bring in proven, experienced, hard-working players in this summer.

“The club obviously took a different route in their transfer recruitment last season when signing the likes of Gil Dias, Diogo Goncalves and many others.

“But bar the signing of Joao Carvalho, the rest have just simply failed to work out, and they just aren’t O’Neill’s type of players at all.

“For what it’s worth, I think that the signing of Ameobi is shrewd for the Reds, especially on a free transfer.”

"With the type of manager Martin O'Neill is, it seemed inevitable that there would be a shift in focus this summer at the City Ground.

"That's not to say that Forest won't be signing foreign players this summer, but a focus on the domestic market has to be the way forward if the club are to break into the top-six.

"There was far too much focus last season on copying the Wolves model and Forest just didn't get the right men in.

"O'Neill won't stand for that nonsense and will have his own men through the door. Ameobi feels like just the start."
