Reading were left frustrated on Wednesday evening, as they fell to a disappointing 2-1 defeat against struggling Birmingham City.

The Royals came into the game under pressure after AFC Bournemouth beat Swansea City on Tuesday, which meant that Veljko Paunovic's side were just two points clear of the relegation zone.

They had the worst start possible against Lee Bowyer's side though as Lukas Jutkiewicz headed home from close-range after just four minutes.

The Royals found chances hard to come by throughout the match, but found a way back into the game through Yakou Meite, who equalised to give the Berkshire-based side some much-needed hope of picking up three points.

But that hope was dashed with 19 minutes remaining of the match, as Birmingham City defender Harlee Dean's well-placed header beat Rafael to put the Blues back ahead on the night.

That's the way it stayed, as Reading's recent struggles against the relegation-threatened teams continued. One player that struggled to make a positive impact during the game was Lucas Joao, with the forward losing possession of the ball eight times (Sofascore), as well as having just 28 touches in the match.

Joao has scored 21 goals in 32 appearances this term, but only has one goal to his name from his last seven matches for the Royals.

Plenty of the Madejski Stadium faithful took to social media to voice their frustrations at his recent struggles, with some calling for him to be dropped to the substitutes bench for their next match against QPR.
