Aston Villa completed their move for Brentford manager Dean Smith this week, with the former Walsall man taking over the reins from Steve Bruce.

And respected journalist Ryan O'Donovan, who followed Smiths career closely working for Football London, told the Birmingham Mail that Smith should be afforded the time at Villa Park in order to be a success.

Donovan was responding to a host of questions on the style, personality, and likeability of Smith, and spoke highly of the new Villa man.

"He's approachable and players like to play for him, take Romaine Sawyers for example, he was coached by Smith and Walsall and followed him to Brentford once he got the job here. He's also a very good coach - he knows how to get the best out of players on the training pitches and then transfer that to a matchday." O Donovan told the Birmingham Mail.

The Football London journalist was full or praise for Smith in the main, but did insist that he must be given the time at Villa Park and not fall foul to another rash managerial change at the club.

"I reckon he has the potential to do well - provided he is afforded the time he had at Brentford. There were times when things weren't going well, like the start of last season, where other clubs would've cut their losses, but Brentford stuck with him." added Donovan.

"He needs that same level at Villa to ensure he can do a job, he won't perform miracles and might not be an overnight success, but give Smith time and he will do well with his boyhood club."

Villa will be hoping Smith can get off to an ideal start following the international break and position the club for a run at the playoffs at the bare minimum.
