Despite losing Will Hughes and Tom Ince in the summer, Gary Rowett reinvested the funds recouped for his star pair in an effective manner, addressing areas of need in his squad to prepare his side for a promotion push this season.

Curtis Davies and Tom Huddlestone were brought in from relegated Hull City to add quality and experience to the side, and cash was splashed on Leicester City’s Tom Lawrence, who had enjoyed a remarkable season whilst on-loan with Ipswich Town.

Rowett’s summer deals have settled well, and with the club well in the mix for a top-six finish, the former Birmingham City boss will be content with what has seen from his side so far.

The January transfer window will provide the manager with one final opportunity to bolster his squad ahead of the second half of the campaign, and the club could be busy when the winter window opens for business.

Faces will come into Pride Park, but some may be fearing for their futures in the East Midlands.

These two men face a crossroads in their careers next month…

Alex Pearce

After signing a new contract in the summer, Pearce declared his delight at being a part of Rowett’s plans at Pride Park, but since expressing his joy, has made just one substitute appearance in the league.

A disappointing development for the defender, Pearce may decide to backtrack on his words and seek a move in the new year, with the 29-year-old craving minutes.

Clubs will offer the player an escape route, and Pearce should perhaps consider calling time on Derby career.

Approaching the second half of his career, Pearce will know that regular first team action is essential for his career to last as long as possible, and this will not happen at Pride Park.

He could stay and wait for injuries at Derby, but the opportunity may never arise.

Chris Martin

The striker returned from a season-long loan spell with Fulham hoping to return to the fold at Pride Park, but has struggled to nail down a regular role at the club.

Just four starts this season and one goal, Martin has failed to impress, and reports had linked the 29-year-old with a shock move to league leaders, Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Matej Vydra and David Nugent have kept Martin out of the side, and with Darren Bent nearing a return to fitness, Martin could be forced further down the pecking order.

If an offer from Wolves actually materialises, the Scottish striker should look to join Nuno Santo’s revolution in the West Midlands.
