Even though it was a mixed September for Charlton Athletic, one of their players made a key contribution throughout the month.

Ricky Holmes was today announced as the PFA Bristol Street Motors League One Player of the Month.

The attacking winger notched three goals that directly contributed to the Addicks picking up points, including goals in back-to-back wins against Oldham and Southend early on.

Those goals have put Holmes as the second top scorer at the club, but it's his overall game that is equally as impressive.

He has been a key figure for Karl Robinson, who has seen his side get off to a very good start and whilst September brought a few winless games, Holmes was always a constant threat.

Charlton sit 5th in the league and finally look to be positioned to mount a serious bid at returning to the second tier.

Any success is likely to be down to their vast attacking options, of which Holmes is key.

Next up, they face Doncaster Rovers when the international break is over.

The Verdict

Ricky Holmes has taken the step up to League One and Charlton really in his stride and this personal accolade reflects on his importance to the team.

The 30-year old scored plenty of goals last season and is doing the same this time round, with three important strikes in last month alone.

It's still early days, but if Holmes and his teammates can maintain their levels of performances, then things might finally appear more positive for Charlton.
