Dion Sanderson refused to be drawn on speculation regarding his long-term future, saying that he's just happy to be enjoying his football.

The Wolves defender is currently on a season-long loan deal with Sunderland where he is thriving as a part of a late push to secure promotion to the Championship.

Lee Johnson is a big admirer of the centre-back and has hinted that he'd love to sign the 21-year-old on a permanent basis if the opportunity arose, but with intense interest from the likes of Crystal Palace, Brighton and Sheffield United it could be tough to strike a deal.

But when quizzed on his plans beyond the end of the season the 21-year-old said that his only focus is on winning matches for Sunderland in their promotion push.

As quoted by Chronicle Live, Sanderson said: "For the time being I'm just enjoying my football really - taking it game by game, winning and enjoying it.

I haven't really thought much of it, it's just enjoying my football."

He added: "Since Bailey Wright and Jordan (Willis)  haven't been in the team I've had that responsibility to step-up.

"Especially playing in the heart of defence, the communication I've had to bring in from them has been key for myself and the team.

"It's been every enjoyable, a challenge, but I'm happy with how things are going.

"I was playing everywhere, but that's part of football. You have to play in positions that you're not used to. It's about being professional and doing the job you need to."

The verdict

There's no doubt that Dion Sanderson is heading for a bright future.

The Sunderland loanee has been a massive player for Lee Johnson's side of late with the centre back showing maturity beyond his tender years.

Whether he'll stick around at the Stadium Of Light remains to be seen, but supporters will surely be hoping that by securing promotion they'll have a chance of bringing the player back.
