Britt Assombalonga scored the decisive goal as Jonathan Woodgate picked up his first victory as Middlesbrough boss.

Having failed to win any of his first three Championship fixtures, Woodgate would have been over the moon to get his first three points over the line.

In what was a scrappy game, Boro scored the only goal of the match when Assombalonga's header was steered past David Marshall after a great cross from midfielder Jonny Howson.

This was Wigan's fourth consecutive defeat in all competitions, whilst Paul Cook's side have failed to score a league goal since the opening day victory over Cardiff.

The Latics will be looking to bounce back on Saturday when they travel to London to take on Queens Park Rangers.

Middlesbrough play Millwall at the Riverside on Saturday, with Woodgate looking for another three points to climb up the Championship table.
