Leeds United are plotting a summer move for Oli McBurnie, with Paul Heckingbottom identifying the striker as one of his top transfer targets ahead of next season.

According to Football Insider, Heckingbottom is keen to link back up with the Swansea City striker, after their paths crossed briefly at Barnsley before the manager’s departure to Elland Road.

McBurnie’s contract with Swansea is running down, with the striker’s current deal set to expire in the summer of 2018, when he returns to Wales from Barnsley, where he is enjoying a successful loan spell.

The 21-year-old has Premier League experience under his belt this season for Swansea, and since his move to Oakwell in January, the youngster has really kicked on and impressed in the Championship.

Since his move to South Yorkshire, McBurnie has made six appearances, starting five fixtures, which have brought five goals.

McBurnie has four goals in his last three appearances, including a brace in Barnsley’s 2-0 victory over Birmingham City and a consolation against Cardiff City in last night’s 2-1 defeat.

Heckingbottom, who was the man to take McBurnie to Oakwell, has his eye on the youngster, as he plans to overhaul the squad he inherited at Elland Road.

The Verdict

McBurnie has been impressive this season, moving away from Swansea and going on to impress at Barnsley.

The 21-year-old is key to the Tykes’ chance of survival this season and is clearly catching the eye with his performances at Oakwell.

If Leeds can get McBurnie on a cut-price deal, it could be a huge summer coup.
