Ipswich Town are expected to bring in a crowd of close to 20,000 supporters for their League One clash with Rotherham United tonight.

Portman Road is one of the more impressive stadiums to bolster League One, with a grand capacity of 30,311. According to the club’s website, around 20,000 of those blue seats are set to be filled for their clash with mid-tabled Rotherham.

The club are sat pretty at the top of the division with 27 points from their opening 12 matches. They are level on points with second place Wycombe Wanderers but have two games in hand over their promotion rivals.

Rotherham head to Ipswich off the back of a disappointing defeat to Oxford United. Before that, they had gone on an impressive four-match unbeaten run, with their most notable scoreline coming at home against Coventry City in a 4-0 riot.

Perhaps supporters are coming to Portman Road expecting to see plenty of goals. Town have managed to score four goals in their last two games at home against Tranmere and Gillingham in 4-1 and 4-0 wins respectively.

With under-19s getting in for just £1 there is no doubt that the crowd will reach some impressive numbers for a standard Wednesday night game.

The high numbers emerge after Ipswich last played in front of a crowd of 5,271 in their EFL Trophy victory against Gillingham in their last home match.

Not since their opening home match of the season against Sunderland have Ipswich surpassed an attendance of 20,000.

The verdict

A crowd of 20,000 for a Wednesday night League One fixture just shows the belief and excitement surrounding the club at the moment.

The fans will be loud and will more than likely aid Ipswich in getting another crucial three points, as they look to stake their claim in the automatic promotion places.
