West Bromwich Albion have identified Sam Johnstone as a transfer target this summer, should Ben Foster leave the Hawthorns.

Foster is attracting interest from Watford, with Alan Nixon, often a reliable source on social media, confirming that West Brom might be open to selling the 35-year-old, with Johnstone lined up as his replacement.

The Manchester United stopper has impressed over the last 18 months, proving to be one of the Championship’s most consistent goalkeepers.

Johnstone’s two loan spells with Aston Villa saw him make 70 appearances across all competitions.

The 25-year-old made 48 of those appearances last season, helping Villa finish fourth in the table and reach the play-offs.

Despite Johnstone’s best efforts, Villa failed to win promotion back to the Premier League, with the goalkeeper returning to his parent-club earlier in the summer.

West Brom are now reportedly targeting a deal for Johnstone, with Darren Moore looking to reshape his squad ahead of their return to the Championship next season.

The Baggies start their season with Bolton Wanderers travelling to the Hawthorns on the first weekend in August.

The Verdict

Johnstone is an extremely good goalkeeper, who will put a number of Championship clubs on alert if he is available.

Having returned to Old Trafford, it was widely expected that Johnstone would be looking for a Premier League move, which could make West Brom’s pursuit difficult.

However, if Moore can sell Johnstone another promotion push and regular football, it could be something that sways a deal.
