Charlton Athletic are gearing up for their League One play-off clash against Doncaster Rovers as they set their sights on a Championship return.

The Addicks finished the season in third place after a highly impressive season under Lee Bowyer's stewardship, with the club benefitting from their impressive loan signings blending in well with the squad.

Josh Cullen joined the club on loan from West Ham United last summer and he has excelled at the heart of Charlton's midfield, which has raised speculation surrounding his future.

Cullen has made 29 appearances for Bowyer's side this season despite dislocating his shoulder and missing a chunk of action in the middle of the season.

His consistently solid performances have now meant West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini is prepared to give him a chance to prove himself at the Hammers over the summer, according to the Evening Standard.

The 23-year-old has only made nine appearances for West Ham since breaking through from the club's academy, but he could now be about to get a better chance to prove his abilities.

"I will go back there (to West Ham) and do pre-season, try and impress the manager there and earn a first-team spot," he said, as quoted by the Standard.

"I have spoken to people at West Ham. They have said they have been watching my games and have been pleased with how I have done.”

The Verdict

This will come as a blow to Charlton fans, who might have thought they had a chance of keeping Cullen next season if they were to seal promotion.

However, Cullen has been so impressive this season and it is no surprise West Ham are keen to see what he can bring to their first team.

He has deserved his chance to prove himself, but he must first remain focus on helping Charlton in the play-offs as he could have a key role to play.
