Neil Harris has proven a tough negotiator at Millwall this summer with him managing to keep his side together despite the overtures of other sides.

The Lions run on one of the smaller budgets in the league and so naturally you expect them to be tempted to sell key players when the bids come in.

However, they've held firm this season and fans will be hoping that means they are no longer a selling club and one that genuinely is looking to kick on in the second tier.

Certainly, keeping the likes of Jake Cooper from going to Steven Gerrard's Rangers is a feather in the cap and the defender has spoken about the speculation with Millwall-dedicated outlet News at Den.

And, clearly, he is more than happy to be staying in Bermondsey:

“I was just focused on coming in and playing for Millwall and getting a good pre-season under my belt.

"I love being at this club and my main priority was just to get fit to have the best chance to have a good season with Millwall.

"What this club has done for me has been amazing, it’s something I wouldn’t be looking to throw away. It wasn’t down to me, they put a price on me and I’m more than happy to be still at Millwall.

"I want to build on last season and help take this club as high as we can go.”

The Verdict

Cooper's words reflect the wider attitude at Millwall at the moment.

None of the players feel bigger than the club and none of them see the Lions as a stepping stone onto other things but actually as a chance to progress as a unit at the Den.

Certainly, other players would have reacted similarly in this situation at the club and that is testament to the ethos Neil Harris has installed.
