Sunderland caretaker boss Robbie Stockdale has admitted he doesn't know what the future holds for four out of contract senior players at the Stadium of Light.

Captain John O'Shea, Marc Wilson, Kazenga LuaLua and Billy Jones could all depart the club in the summer after a tough season for the Wearside outfit.

And, Stockdale, who was in charge for yesterday's thumping 3-0 win over champions Wolves, told the Sunderland Echo that he won't be responsible for what happens to the four men.

"The original plan under Chris and Kit was they would be in Monday, chats over contracts, post-season plans etc. I have decided not to do that as it is not my decision what happens next with the players out of contract."

One of the quartet who appears to be on the way is experienced defender O'Shea, who was substituted in the 87th minute and given a standing ovation in the victory over Wolves.

However, any decision is sure to be in the hands of the new manager that is expected to be named in the coming weeks once the takeover led by Stewart Donald has been finalised.

The Verdict

It's not an ideal position for the players to be in but they will understand that recent changes at the club mean they will have to be patient.

You can't really see any of the players staying as Sunderland will need to cut the wage bill drastically following relegation.

Yet, nothing will be finalised until the new manager comes in and that makes perfect sense.
